Handy Hints for Carpet Care

How to stay in love with your new carpet

Have you fallen in love with your new carpet?  Feel that rush of excitement when you see it from another room?  Stare at it, longingly, wishing that all your carpets looked this good?

That's how you should feel about your Carpet One carpet, now and forever.  Which is why we have prepared all of our best tips for cleaning, care and general maintenance of your carpet in this easy-to-read web page brochure.  Just follow the simple instructions outlined here, and your carpet will give your years of beauty and performance.  In fact, a little care on your part will go a long way toward ensuring a true and long-lasting relationship.

What to expect during the honeymoon

Here are a few things that you may notice soon after your new carpet is installed.   Don't worry.  Most of the following situations are perfectly normal and can be dealt with in a snap:

Shedding - Most carpets retain some loose fibres after they leave the factory or showroom.  These fibres often appear as balls of fluff on the surface of your carpet or in your vacuum cleaner.  With time, they will work themselves out and go away.

Sprouting - Do you have a loose tuft that seems to grow above the rest of the carpet surface?  If this happens, just snip the end even with the surface.  Don't ever yank out long or loose ends!  This can permanently damage the carpet.

Shading - You may notice some variations in the colour of your carpet - one area may seem to change colour when you look at it from different directions.  This is because light reflects differently as the pile is pushed in different directions.  Foot traffic generally causes this.  The best solution is to sweep or vacuum the pile in a uniform direction.  "Shading", sometimes referred to as watermarking or pooling, is an inherent characteristic of some fine cut pile carpets, and is not considered a manufacturing defect.  Colours are subject to change from dye lot to dye lot.

Rippling - If your carpet is rippling up off the floor, it is probably due to relatively high humidity.  This situation usually resolves itself as the humidity levels stabilize and the carpet settles.

The "New Carpet Smell" - That "new carpet smell" is as harmless as a "new car smell" and is nothing to be concerned about.  It usually goes away within about a week, sometimes within days.  To minimize the odour, be sure to ventilate the area as much as possible.   Open doors and windows, and use fans to keep the air circulating during installation and for up to 72 hours afterward.  Take advantage of your heating or air conditioning fans, if you have them.  You should also vacuum your carpet often to help remove the odour.

Static Electricity - If a room's humidity is low, a static charge can build up in your carpet as you walk across it.  There are commercial products available you can apply to your carpet to reduce or eliminate static electric build up.  Over time, your carpet will be less prone to holding a charge.

Crushing - Your carpet will display crushing in spots where heavy objects have been placed.  To raise the pile back to its former height, you will have to do some vigorous brushing.   You can also try holding a hot steam iron over the indentations - but bring the iron no closer than six inches above the carpet.   Another method is to place an ice cube in the indentation and allow it to melt.  The process of evaporation should help reset the original shape of the tuft.

Missing Tufts - If a tuft becomes snagged or works loose, just cut it off and let the surrounding yarn fill in the space.

The secrets of everlasting love

You must do your part to ensure a long, satisfying relationship with your carpet or your romance might fade... along with the colour, quality, and life of your carpet.   Here's how to keep your carpet performing its best.

Step 1
Reduce Dirt Build-Up.

Use mats at all entrances to keep outside dirt outside.  Relocate furniture periodically to allow for even distribution of traffic wear.
Step 2
Vacuum!

Dirt is like sandpaper. Nothing wears out carpet quicker. Only regular vacuuming will remove it.
Step 3
Remove Spills Immediately
.
All spills should be cleaned up promptly. Almost anything will stain or discolour your carpet if left unattended. Find the stain on our stain removal chart and follow the recommended procedure.
WARNING: Use detergent cautiously. If soap remains in the fibres after drying it will attract dirt particles, and hasten staining.

Additional Important Information

  • Some stains may require professional cleaning after the removal method shown.
  • Wet vacuuming is recommended for larger spills to speed up blotting.  Remind professional cleaners not to use water over 55oC.
  • Some stubborn stains may need a liquid or dry powder spot remover or professional cleaning.  Do not apply fungicides, bactericides, biocides, anti-static or other topical finishes to carpet.  Remind professional cleaners not to use water over 55oC.
